Beyond Borders: A Journey Through Migration and History

Çeşme Ulusoy Maritime High School Students Visited Buca Migration and Population Exchange Memorial House/Museum As part of the Erasmus+ project "Beyond Borders: People" (Project Number: 2023-1-FR01-KA220-SCH-000155528), in which our school, Çeşme Ulusoy Maritime Technology Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School, is a partner, we carried out a meaningful activity with our students. Under the guidance of our project coordinators, we visited the Buca Migration and Population Exchange Memorial House, offering our students a history- and culture-filled experience. The Buca Migration and Population Exchange Memorial House aims to convey the stories of migrations to Turkey, particularly the Turkish-Greek Population Exchange, and to exhibit the cultural heritage left behind by migrants. During our visit, students were informed about the historical, social, and cultural aspects of migration. In line with the main objectives of our project, this visit provided an important opportunity for our students to gain a deeper understanding of the causes and consequences of migration. Additionally, it aimed to raise awareness of how past population movements have influenced today’s social structure. History teacher Mehtap Gülçiçek Ay, who works at the Buca Migration and Population Exchange Memorial House, provided our students with valuable insights into the population exchange period. We extend our gratitude to her for her dedication and contributions. The "Beyond Borders: People" Erasmus+ project continues its efforts to enhance students' historical awareness, promote cultural heritage, and foster a deeper understanding of migration.
